Canada Study Permit Proof of Funds for Indian Students

Canada study permit proof of funds rose to CAD 23,448 on 1 September 2026, and the SDS route Indian students relied on closed in 2024. What to show now.

By Last reviewed 5 min read

Most advice about the Canada study permit proof of funds requirement is out of date in three specific ways, and each one is expensive for an Indian family.

Here is what the Canadian government actually publishes, read on 26 September 2026.

Canada student visa financial requirement, and why January is the wrong month

For study permit applications submitted on or after 1 September 2026, a single applicant outside Quebec must show CAD 23,448 for living costs, on top of first-year tuition and travel.

People Funds required per year
1 CAD 23,448
2 CAD 29,192
3 CAD 35,888
4 CAD 43,572
Each additional CAD 6,318

These figures come from IRCC's proof of financial support page. They exclude tuition and transport, which you must evidence separately. The tuition side of the same arithmetic is in the cost of studying abroad from India.

Two things about this number are widely misreported.

First, the scale of the change. The requirement sat at CAD 10,000 from the early 2000s until the end of 2023. It more than doubled to CAD 20,635 on 1 January 2024, then rose to CAD 22,895 in 2025, then to CAD 23,448 in September 2026. A family working from a 2023 figure is short by more than half.

Second, the timing. The requirement used to update on 1 January, and a lot of content still says so. It does not any more: the 2025 tier ran to 31 August 2026 and the raise landed on 1 September. There was no January 2026 increase. If you are checking annually in December, you are checking the wrong month.

The figure is pegged at 75 percent of Statistics Canada's low-income cut-off, so it moves with that rather than by discretion.

Is SDS Canada discontinued? The Student Direct Stream closed in 2024

This is the change that catches the most Indian applicants, because the agent ecosystem was built on it.

IRCC closed the Student Direct Stream at 2pm ET on 8 November 2024, together with Nigeria Student Express. SDS was the fast-processing route available to fourteen countries including India, and its defining feature was an upfront GIC.

Nothing replaced it. IRCC's own wording is that applicants "are invited to apply through the regular study permit stream, which accepts Guaranteed Investment Certificates as proof of financial support." The reasons given were programme integrity and diversification. The closure notice is still published.

What this means in practice:

  • There is no mandatory GIC any more, and IRCC publishes no GIC amount. A GIC is now one acceptable proof among several: a Canadian account with funds transferred, six months of statements, tuition and housing receipts, an education loan, a scholarship letter, or a supporter's letter with pay stubs.
  • Processing is no longer expedited by taking the GIC route.
  • Any agent still selling "SDS processing" is selling something that has not existed for nearly two years. Ask directly which stream your application goes through.

The Provincial Attestation Letter, the cap, and why you cannot apply without one

Since 22 January 2024 most applicants need a Provincial Attestation Letter, issued through the institution, confirming there is space under that province's share of the national cap.

For 2026 the cap allows 309,670 study permit application spaces, with allocations set from each jurisdiction's 2024 and 2025 approval rates. The issuance target for 2026 is up to 408,000 permits, seven percent below 2025 and sixteen percent below 2024.

From 1 January 2026, master's and doctoral students at public designated learning institutions are exempt from the PAL requirement. Undergraduates are not.

The practical consequence is a sequencing one: the letter comes from the province via your institution, so a late offer can mean a late PAL, and a late PAL means a late permit application against a capped pool. For undergraduates this argues for accepting early.

Item Amount
Study permit, per person CAD 150
Biometrics, per person CAD 85
Biometrics, family maximum CAD 170

PGWP eligibility for Indian students, and the rule that does not apply

The post-graduation work permit field-of-study restriction generated a great deal of panic in India, and for degree students it is mostly noise.

It applies only where the study permit application was submitted on or after 1 November 2024. And bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates are exempt from it entirely. The restriction bites on college, polytechnic and non-degree programmes, which must have a CIP code on IRCC's currently eligible list. IRCC has said it will neither add nor remove eligible fields during 2026.

What does apply to degree students is the language requirement: CLB 7 in all four abilities for university-level graduates, CLB 5 for college-level, again only for study permits submitted from 1 November 2024.

So the honest summary for an Indian student choosing a Canadian degree: the field-of-study rule is not your problem, the language threshold is, and the money threshold is the one that has actually moved.

Canada study permit requirements for Indian students: what to do now

  1. Check the figure for your submission date, not the year. The tier changed on 1 September 2026, not 1 January.
  2. Ask any agent which stream they file under. If the answer is SDS, they are describing a closed programme.
  3. Chase the PAL early, because it sits between your offer and your application and the pool is capped.
  4. Read what changed in Canadian refusals, since most Indian refusals are documentary rather than academic, and the undergraduate route into Canada for the admission side.
  5. Sequence the offer, the PAL and the permit as one timeline. The Canada field guide keeps the current dates, and building a list where that timeline actually works is part of college admissions counselling.

Where this stops applying

Every figure above was read on IRCC's own pages on 26 September 2026. Canadian study rules have changed several times a year since 2023, and the caps are set annually. Before you file anything, open the IRCC page for your submission date and take its number over this one.

Questions this article answers

How much money do I need to show for a Canadian study permit in 2026?

For applications submitted on or after 1 September 2026, a single applicant outside Quebec must show CAD 23,448 for living costs, on top of first-year tuition and travel. Two people is CAD 29,192, three is CAD 35,888, and each additional person adds CAD 6,318. Quebec sets its own figure through the MIFI rather than following the federal number.

Is the Student Direct Stream still available for Indian students?

No. IRCC closed the Student Direct Stream at 2pm ET on 8 November 2024, along with Nigeria Student Express. Nothing replaced it. Applications now go through the regular study permit stream, which still accepts a Guaranteed Investment Certificate as proof of funds. A great deal of Indian agent and aggregator content still describes SDS as the fast route; it no longer exists.

Do I still need a GIC for the Canada study permit?

Not as a requirement. Under the regular stream a GIC is one accepted form of proof among several, alongside a Canadian bank account with funds transferred, six months of bank statements, tuition and housing receipts, an education loan, scholarship proof, or a supporter letter with pay stubs. IRCC publishes no mandatory GIC amount now that SDS has closed.

What is a Provincial Attestation Letter and do I need one?

A PAL, or TAL in Quebec, is a letter from the province confirming there is space for you under its allocation of the national cap. It has been required for most applicants since 22 January 2024 and is issued through your institution. From 1 January 2026, master's and doctoral students at public designated learning institutions no longer need one. The 2026 cap allows 309,670 study permit application spaces.

Does the new PGWP field-of-study rule affect Indian degree students?

Not if you are doing a degree. The field-of-study restriction applies only to study permit applications submitted on or after 1 November 2024, and bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates are exempt from it regardless. College, polytechnic and non-degree programmes must have a CIP code on IRCC's eligible list. Degree students still face the language requirement of CLB 7 in all four abilities.
