Hong Kong publishes more precise entry requirements for Indian applicants than almost any other destination, and almost none of it is republished accurately. Here is what HKU, HKUST and CUHK actually state, read on 26 September 2026.
HKU entry requirements from India, programme by programme
HKU runs a tool that gives an expected lower boundary as an overall percentage for Indian board applicants, programme by programme. It is the most specific published guidance any of the three gives:
| Expected lower boundary | Programmes |
|---|---|
| 90% | Arts, Science, Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Computer, Electrical, Electronic, Data and Systems), Dentistry, Nursing, Social Sciences, Biomedical Sciences |
| 92% | Business Administration, Accounting and Finance, Business Analytics, Economics and Finance |
| 93% | Psychology, Robotics Engineering, Global Engineering and Business |
| 95% | Law, BA and LLB, BSc and LLB, Actuarial Science, Engineering Elite, Computing and Data Science |
| 97% | Quantitative Finance, International Business and Global Management |
| 98% | BBA (Law) and LLB |
| 99% | MBBS |
Subject minima apply on top of the overall figure. Civil Engineering wants 90 percent in Mathematics and 90 in Biology, Chemistry or Physics. Business wants 92 in English and 92 in Mathematics. MBBS wants 90 in Biology or Chemistry, on top of a 99 percent overall boundary.
That MBBS figure is worth pausing on. It is effectively a top-of-the-country mark, and it sits alongside a fee of HK$590,000 a year, which we cover in Hong Kong university fees.
HKU's tool is the live source and its printed brochure runs slightly lower on a few programmes, so treat the tool as current.
HKUST admission on CBSE marks, and CUHK requirements for Indian students
HKUST accepts "Pass Certificates obtained on completion of Standard XII (State and National boards)" and gives one competitiveness reference rather than per-programme boundaries: an overall average of 85 percent or above. Two procedural details matter more than most applicants realise. HKUST also expects your Standard X results, and Indian applicants must nominate a career counsellor, who is emailed directly for a predicted-grade report.
CUHK recognises AISSCE and ISC and publishes a general minimum of Standard X and Standard XII with an average of 80 percent in all subjects, noting that general minimum requirements "are for guidance only" and that programme-specific requirements sit on top.
So the published bars run roughly: CUHK 80, HKUST 85, HKU 90 and upward by programme. Those are floors for consideration, not predictions of an offer.
The English requirement, which can save you a test
All three accept an Indian board English mark in place of IELTS or TOEFL, not merely alongside it:
| University | Board English accepted at |
|---|---|
| HKU | 90% in Grade 12 English |
| HKUST | 80% in Class 12 English |
| CUHK | 80% in Grade 12 English |
The alternatives, if your English mark falls short, are IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in Writing and Speaking at HKU, and IELTS 6.0 overall at both HKUST and CUHK. The same board-English route exists in several other destinations, set out in TOEFL and IELTS waivers for Indian students. All three also accept SAT Reading and Writing, at 610 for HKU and 590 for the other two.
Two things to watch. CUHK does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake, IELTS Indicator, IELTS Online or TOEFL Home Edition. And TOEFL scoring changed on 21 January 2026, so all three publish separate thresholds either side of that date.
Nobody requires the SAT
None of the three requires SAT or ACT from an Indian board applicant. They appear as an alternative qualification route for applicants presenting American-pattern credentials, and an SAT Reading and Writing score can satisfy the English requirement. If you are applying on CBSE or ISC results, the test is optional and the marks are the application.
Deadlines for Hong Kong university admission from India, 2027 intake
| University | Opens | Early or priority round | Closes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HKU | 23 Sep 2026 | 25 Nov 2026, then rolling | 25 Aug 2027 |
| HKUST | 2 Oct 2026 | 25 Nov 2026, then rolling | 30 Jun 2027 |
| CUHK | 2 Oct 2026 | Advance offer 12 Nov 2026 | Regular round 7 Jan 2027 |
Application fees: HK$600 at HKUST, HK$500 at CUHK. CUHK also asks successful applicants for a HK$10,000 first instalment of composition fees, and its advance offer round does not apply to Medicine.
Two of the three run rolling admission after the priority round, which rewards applying early rather than polishing. CUHK is the exception with a hard regular-round date in January. The wider picture, including how the Hong Kong calendar sits against the UK and US rounds, is in Hong Kong university admissions from India, and the dates sit on our deadlines page.
Hong Kong student visa for Indian students, and the IANG visa after graduation
The student visa is sponsored either by the institution granting your acceptance or by an individual Hong Kong resident. If the university sponsors you, financial-standing documents are not required. The fee is HK$330, raised from HK$230 in September 2025.
Processing time comes with a caveat worth repeating: the Immigration Department's guidebook says six weeks, its own study FAQ says two to three weeks, and HKU advises allowing eight to ten. Plan on the longest.
While studying, undergraduates on locally accredited programmes may work 20 hours a week on campus during term, and without restriction from 1 June to 31 August, plus curriculum-related internships.
After graduating, IANG is the reason many students choose Hong Kong. Apply within six months of your graduation date and you are a "recent graduate", which means no job offer is required. You get 24 months, free to take and change employment without approval, and you may sponsor dependants. Extensions follow a three-year pattern and do need a job. Seven years of continuous ordinary residence opens a right of abode application. IANG carries its own fees: HK$600 to apply plus HK$1,300 for issuance.
India is not on the restricted list for IANG. The Hong Kong field guide keeps the current version of these rules, and choosing between Hong Kong, Singapore and a UK list is the sort of decision we work through in college admissions counselling.
Where this stops applying
Everything above was read on immd.gov.hk or the universities' own admissions sites on 26 September 2026. HKU's boundaries are published per cycle and move, HKUST publishes a competitiveness reference rather than a guarantee, and the immigration fee schedule changed as recently as September 2025. Confirm on the university's own page for your intake before acting.
