College counsellor fees in India run from nothing to ₹6 lakh a year, and the spread tells you more than the number. Commission agents are free because universities pay them. Online platforms charge ₹90,000 to ₹4,00,000 per country. Premium Indian firms charge ₹4 to ₹6 lakh a year, and the best-known international consultants charge $25,000 to $75,000 (₹24 to ₹73 lakh) for multi-year packages.

The reason the question is hard is that "counselling" is not one product. One firm's ₹3 lakh buys weekly sessions with the founder for two years; another's buys a login to a portal and a mentor who changes every term. Price only makes sense once you know what is inside, and once you know what the family should be spending at all, which is the question in how much to spend on college counselling.

How much do college counsellors charge, segment by segment

Segment Typical fee Who pays them What you get Best for
Study-abroad agents Free, or ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 processing Partner universities, by commission Applications to partner institutions, visa help UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland programs that admit on marks
Online platforms and edtech ₹90,000 to ₹4,00,000 per country The family Portal, assigned mentor, essay reviews, list; profile add-ons sold separately Grade 11 and 12 students who need structure and a second pair of eyes
Premium Indian firms ₹4 to ₹6 lakh a year; ₹8 to ₹15 lakh over three years The family Named counsellor, profile building, research and competitions, essays, list, applications Grade 9 to 11 students aiming at selective US, UK and Singapore universities
International premium consultants $25,000 to $75,000 and up ($100,000+ at the top) The family Multi-year strategy, often ex-admissions officers, sometimes a team per student Families already paying full US tuition who want the same name as their peers
Plinth US ₹2,00,000 to ₹5,00,000 a year by grade; UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia ₹50,000 to ₹2,50,000 one-time The family Founder-led from diagnosis to enrolment, with a mentor team for competitions and research; essays edited, never written Grade 10 to 12 students applying to one destination or several

A few notes on the rows. The agent segment is not dishonest, but it is not counselling: the commission, typically 10 to 20 percent of first-year fees, decides which universities you hear about. The edtech segment is where most Indian families now land, and the per-country pricing matters: a US plus UK application can cost double the headline figure. The international premium segment is a real service for a real market, but in my experience the extra $40,000 buys reassurance and a brand more than it buys outcomes.

On the multinational brands specifically, since "how much does Crimson Education cost" is one of the most searched questions in this category: families who have used the large international firms report multi-year packages in the $35,000 to $65,000 range (₹34 to ₹63 lakh), with a team of strategists, mentors and editors rather than one named counsellor. Whether that structure suits your child is a separate question from the price; big-brand counselling firms versus independent counsellors takes it up in detail.

Study abroad consultant fees versus independent counsellor fees

Before comparing prices, find out who pays the firm, because it decides what every other number means.

Commission agent ("consultancy") Fee-only counsellor
Who pays them Partner universities, 10 to 20 percent of first-year fees The family
What it costs you Free, or ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 processing ₹90,000 to ₹6 lakh a year
Which universities you hear about The ones that pay commission ("we have tie-ups with") Any the student can get into and afford
Where it works well UK, Australian, Canadian and Irish programs that admit on marks Selective US, UK, Singapore and Hong Kong universities
Where it breaks Top US universities, Oxbridge, NUS, NTU and HKU pay no commission, so they rarely appear on the list Nowhere structurally; quality depends on the person
What to check Whether fees are payable to the agent or directly to the university Who delivers the hours, and the refund clause

A firm can be honest in either column. What it cannot honestly do is take commission and call itself independent. The structural difference, and how it shapes the shortlist you are shown, is set out in study-abroad agent versus independent counsellor.

Before you sign, ask about the four items that most often turn out to be extra: research, test tutoring, additional universities beyond the package count, and a second destination. The ₹3 lakh package that becomes ₹6 lakh by Grade 12 is the most common complaint I hear from families who switch to us.

Plinth prices by destination, with fixed fees and no GST line on top. The US is an annual fee by grade: ₹2,00,000 in Grade 10, ₹3,00,000 in Grade 11 and ₹5,00,000 in Grade 12. The UK is ₹2,50,000, Singapore and Hong Kong ₹1,50,000 each and Australia ₹50,000, paid once whichever grade the student joins in. The most expensive destination on the plan is the main one, and each additional destination is 25% off. Two awards or competitions a year are mentored inside every fee. Research from ₹90,000 and essays from ₹75,000 are available on their own; SAT or ACT teachers, AP teachers and school classes are quoted on request. The profile review is free, and the full price list is public because the alternative is a sales call.

What drives the cost of a college admission consultant in India up or down

Grade at signing. A Grade 9 start costs more in total because it runs three years, but per year it is often cheaper, and it is the only start that allows a real research pillar. Grade 12 packages should be the cheapest, because there is nothing left to build.

Number of destinations. US plus UK is the most common combination for Indian students and doubles the essay work: a personal statement and eight to fifteen supplements for the US, a structured academic statement for the UK. Most platforms charge per country; some firms include two.

Who delivers. A founder or senior counsellor with a capped list of students costs more per hour than a rotating mentor. This is the line item worth paying for, and the one most often hidden.

Add-ons. Research programs, summer programs and competition entries have their own fees outside any counselling package. A selective US summer program can cost $5,000 to $10,000 on its own; the summer programs resource lists which are free and which are worth the money.

Instalments, refunds and contracts

A fair contract in this market looks like this: a written scope that names the counsellor, the number of sessions or hours, the number of universities and essays, and what happens if the family stops. Payment in three or four instalments tied to stages, or monthly for long packages. A refund clause for the unused portion if the named counsellor leaves.

What to refuse: full payment upfront for multi-year work, "success fees" payable on admission to particular universities (this is how ghostwriting gets funded), and any clause that stops you from using another tutor or program.

Red flags at any price

  • A guarantee of admission, or a "money-back if not admitted to a top 50" offer. Selective admission cannot be guaranteed by anyone outside the admissions office, and the money-back version is priced so that the firm wins on the students who would have been admitted anyway.
  • Essays "drafted" by the firm. Common App and most universities prohibit it, an admit can be rescinded, and the student cannot discuss the essay in an interview.
  • A list of partner universities presented as a college list.
  • Success statistics without a denominator. "200 Ivy admits" means nothing without the number of students served.
  • Guaranteed publication of research, or a "paper in eight weeks" promise. That is a paper mill with a counselling logo.
  • Pressure to sign in the first meeting, especially in Grade 12 when the family is anxious. The right first meeting ends with a written assessment and a week to think.

What to do this month

Grade 9 or 10. Get two or three written diagnoses, including a free one. Compare what each firm proposes to build, not their logos; the method page is a checklist of what a full process should contain. Pay for profile building first; essays are two years away.

Grade 11. Ask every firm what can realistically be added to the profile in the months remaining, and how much of the fee is for that versus the application. Budget separately for test tutoring and any research or competition entry.

Grade 12. Buy the application only. A Grade 12 timeline should cost ₹1 to ₹2 lakh at a premium firm, not ₹5 lakh. If someone quotes the full package now, ask what they plan to add to the profile before the 1 November early deadlines.

For whether any of this is worth paying for in your situation, read is a college counsellor worth it.

Where these numbers do not apply

The fees above are for students applying to selective universities that read profiles, mainly the US, UK, Singapore, Hong Kong and India's liberal-arts universities. For Australian and most Canadian programs that admit on marks, an agent or a direct application is the rational route and paying premium counselling fees is wasteful. Prices also move: the ranges here are from firms' public pricing and family reports as of September 2026, and a firm's actual quote can differ once add-ons are included, so get everything in writing.

Questions this article answers

Why are some study-abroad consultants in India free?

Because the university pays them. Agents receive a commission, commonly 10 to 20 percent of first-year tuition, from partner institutions in the UK, Australia, Canada and Ireland for each student they place. The service is free to you and expensive in a different way: the list you are shown is the list of universities that pay, not the list you could get into.

How much does an Ivy League counsellor cost?

US-based premium firms charge $25,000 to $75,000 for multi-year packages, and a few well-known consultants charge over $100,000. Indian premium firms charge ₹4 to ₹6 lakh a year for a similar scope, sometimes more with research and competition add-ons. Neither price buys admission; both buy time and judgement, which is why you should ask exactly who delivers the hours.

How much does Crimson Education cost for an Indian family?

Crimson does not publish prices. Third-party reports in 2025 and 2026 put multi-year packages at $35,000 to $65,000, which is roughly ₹34 to ₹63 lakh, with figures near $200,000 reported at the top end. What you are buying at that price is a team of strategists, mentors and editors rather than one named counsellor, so ask how many hours the named strategist gives your child before comparing the figure with anything else.

Can college counselling fees be paid in instalments?

Usually, and you should insist on it. A fair structure is a third at signing, a third at the start of application season and the balance before submissions, or monthly for long packages. Be wary of any firm that requires the full multi-year fee upfront and non-refundable, because it removes the only leverage you have if the named counsellor disappears.

What is a reasonable price for college essay editing alone?

In India, ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000 for a personal statement plus supplements, depending on the number of universities and rounds of editing. Anything under ₹20,000 for a full essay set is usually a template service. Anything that includes writing the essay for you, at any price, is a liability rather than a purchase.
